(in Switzerland) Matterhorn Mountain; the iconic symbol of Switzerland -- Straddling the border between Switzerland and Italy, this peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps is one of the highest summits in Europe. The four steep faces are split by the Hörnli, Furggen, Leone, and Zmutt ridges. Matterhorn overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt, in the canton of Valais, and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley. To the east of the Matterhorn is Theodul Pass, the main passageway between the two valleys on its north and south sides, and a much-travelled trade route since the Roman Era.
