At Kelvingrove Park in the West End of Glasgow. Scotland

"Life is the Green Leaf. Let every artist strive to make his flower a beautiful living thing, something that will convince the world that there may be, there are, things more precious more beautiful - more lasting than life itself…." — Charles Rennie Mackintosh

(in the West End of Glasgow, in Scotland) The country's largest city, Glasgow is located in western Scotland, just 20 miles (32 km) from the Atlantic coast, in the historic county of Lanarkshire. The city boasts many cultural amenities, including the Scottish Opera, the Scottish Ballet, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The Glasgow Science Center includes the Glasgow Tower, the tallest freestanding structure in Scotland. Glasgow's principal architectural legacy, it's an impressive assemblage of stately Victorian mansions and public buildings.that lend the city a solid dignity that may be a bit misleading. More svelte are the sublime designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, which dot the city; visiting a few of his buildings soon reveals his genius. The city -- ever proud of its working-class background -- also displays its industrial heritage, while modern structures, many along the Clyde River, have become local icons.

+ Since collecting was the must-do thing in Victorian times, it's no surprise that Glasgow's architectural legacy from that period is complemented by some of its museums and galleries. Kelvingrove combines natural history and diverse objects from around the world with a first-rate art collection, while nearby Kelvin Hall now hosts the University of Glasgow's eclectic Hunterian museum exhibits and paintings, within its sumptuous Mackintosh interior. The Riverside also holds an interesting ensemble of historic vehicles; to the south, the Burrell Collection is quite an impressive body of archaeological treasures, and objets d'art from around the world.

+ Glaswegians clearly work to live, and the city comes into its own after five o'clock when the city's pubs are gloriously friendly -- places where you're likely to have some entertaining blethers (chats) with locals, should you pop into one. Glasgow's live music scene is also legendary; big bands play at iconic venues, but a number of the pubs have regular gigs that are quite entertaining as well. The downtown area has several major shopping centers and arcades fully stocked with global brands to augment their more local offerings. On the fringes of this area and in the West End are the bohemian beats: record stores, vintage clothing markets and second-hand booksellers.

+ Featured here is Kelvingrove Park in the West End of Glasgow. A popular public park, it contains the famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Straddling the River Kelvin, the park is overlooked by the University of Glasgow. As well as having hosted many significant events over the years, such as the 1901 International Exhibition and the 1911 Scottish Exhibition, it is known as a home for local bird life.
