In th city of Regensburg, Oberpfalz region of Bavaria, southeast Germany

 The Upper Palatinate (German: Oberpfalz) is one of the seven administrative regions of Bavaria, Germany, located in the east of Bavaria.

=============================================================================
(in the capital of the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria) The city of Regensburg, at the confluence of the Danube, Naab, and Regen rivers, dates back to Roman times and was the first capital of Bavaria. Two millennia of history bequeathed the city some of the region’s finest architectural heritage, a fact recognized by UNESCO in 2006. Though high on the historical scale, today’s Regensburg is a laid-back, unpretentious sort of place, and its tangle of old streets is a joy to explore. Founded by the Romans in 179 CE as Casta Regina ("Fortress by the River Regen"), Regensburg is one of Germany's oldest towns. Since it was mainly spared from Allied bombings during WWII, many visitors flock to see the wonderfully intact Old Town and its many medieval structures. The 12th-century Stone Bridge was used by Crusaders en route to the Holy Land. The Regensburg Cathedral (or Dom St. Peter) is one of southern Germany's finest examples of Gothic architecture.

+ With more than 150,000 inhabitants, Regensburg is the fourth-largest city in the State of Bavaria after Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg. From its foundation as an imperial Roman river fort, the city has been the political, economic, and cultural center of the surrounding region. Later, under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire, it housed the Perpetual Diet of Regensburg. The medieval center of the city was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not just because of its well-preserved architecture, but also due to the city's historical importance for assemblies during the Holy Roman Empire.

+ Regensburg has the largest medieval Old Town north of the Alps (with nearly 1,500 listed buildings), and quite an attractive cityscape. Its most famous sights are located mainly in the Old Town, such as: The Dom (Cathedral) -- an example of pure German Gothic that is regarded as the main work of Gothic architecture in Bavaria). It was started in 1275 and completed in 1634, with the exception of the towers, which were finished in 1869. The interior contains numerous interesting monuments, including a masterpiece by Peter Vischer. Adjoining the cloisters are two chapels, which predate the cathedral. The official choir for the liturgical music at St Peter's Cathedral is the famous Regensburger Domspatzen ("cathedral sparrows").

+ Despite repeated bombings in World War II, Regensburg sustained little damage, and most of the city’s medieval buildings survived. Its imposing patricians’ houses are unique in Germany, and the Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge) across the Danube is a medieval constructional marvel that was repaired after the war. The cathedral of St. Peter is one of the most important Gothic churches in Bavaria, with 14th-century stained-glass windows and two Romanesque chapels in the adjoining cloisters. Its Boys’ Choir (Regensburger Domspatzen) is well known.
