In the city of Shimla (formerly Simla), lies northeast of Chandigarh, northwestern India

 "Up at eight; Down at five Can’t be late;

Be on time Same old thing I could cry
They clipped my wings and I can’t fly
I gotta go get away from it all...."
-- a few lines from "I Gotta Get Away from It All," a song by The Cowsills

(in northwestern India) The city of Shimla (formerly Simla), lies northeast of Chandigarh on a ridge of the Himalayan foothills, at an elevation of about 2,200 meters. Shimla was built by the British on land they had retained after the Gurkha War of 1814–16 (and was used for resting troops). It gained popularity as a summer resort because of its cool climate and scenic setting, and from 1865 to 1939, it served as India’s summer capital.
+ Besides its administrative function, the city is one of India’s most popular hill resorts. It is a rail terminus and lies on a main road 175 miles (280 km) north of Delhi. The city is surrounded by dense forests and mountains. As Shimla has retained its colonial heritage, the Viceregal Lodge, a Scottish baronial mansion of the British era, is one of the main attractions.

+ Strung out along a ridge with steep forested hillsides falling away in all directions, the Himachal capital and largest city of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is one of India's most popular hill resorts, buzzing with a happy flow of heat-fleeing vacationers. Traffic is banned from the central part of town, so walking is pleasant (even the mildly breathtaking up/down hill treks). A long, winding main street, The Mall, runs east and west just below the spine of the hill. South of it, the maze-like alleys and stairways of the bustling bazaar that cascades steeply down to Cart Road.

+ Many visitors enjoy a heritage walk through Shimla’s Victorian-era architecture, labyrinthine bazaars, and long pedestrian shopping mall. Be sure not to cause any ruckus while taking in the town from Scandal Point, a large, open square. (Shimla was, after all, a retreat destination for Mahatma Gandhi, who frequented a Georgian mansion in Shimla’s suburbs from the mid-1930s to '40s.)

+ The climatic conditions attracted the British to establish the city in the dense forests of the Himalayas. As the summer capital, Shimla hosted many important political meetings. After independence, the state of Himachal Pradesh came into being (in 1948), as a result of the integration of 28 princely states. Even after independence, the city remained an important political center.

+ Shimla's colonial architecture and churches, the temples, and the natural environment of the city attract tourists. Major city-center attractions include the Shri Hanuman Jakhu (Statue), Jakhu Temple, Viceregal Lodge, Christ Church, Mall Road, The Ridge and Annadale. Due to its steep terrain, Shimla hosts the mountain biking race MTB Himalaya*, which started in 2005 and is regarded as the biggest event of its kind in South Asia.
