KANDERSTEG & OESCHINEN LAKE: WHERE THE SWISS ALPS TOUCH HEAVEN.

There are places in Switzerland where nature seems to have abandoned all restraint, creating landscapes so magnificent that even the most experienced traveller struggles to find the right words. Kandersteg and the breathtaking Oeschinen Lake in the Bernese Oberland are among them. Here, the mountains rise dramatically towards the sky, waterfalls cascade down sheer rock faces, alpine meadows stretch across the valleys, and an extraordinary turquoise lake rests like a precious jewel in the heart of the Alps.

Kandersteg: A Village Straight Out of a Swiss Postcard

Nestled at approximately 1,200 metres above sea level in the canton of Bern, Kandersteg is a charming traditional Alpine village surrounded by some of Switzerland's most spectacular mountain scenery. With its wooden chalets, flower-filled balconies, picturesque churches and peaceful streets, the village retains the authentic character of a traditional Swiss mountain settlement.

Towering peaks, including the imposing Blüemlisalp massif, provide a magnificent natural backdrop. The village is also an important gateway to the UNESCO-listed Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch region and a favourite destination for hikers, nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Despite its popularity, Kandersteg has managed to preserve an atmosphere of tranquillity. Walking through the village, one encounters traditional architecture, cosy mountain restaurants, beautifully maintained gardens and spectacular views in almost every direction. It is a wonderful place to slow down, breathe the crisp mountain air and appreciate the understated beauty of Switzerland.

Oeschinen Lake: A Turquoise Jewel in the Mountains

The undisputed crown jewel of this region is Oeschinensee, or Oeschinen Lake, situated approximately 1,578 metres above sea level, above Kandersteg.

Covering an area of approximately 1.115 square kilometres and reaching a maximum depth of 56 metres, this magnificent mountain lake was formed by prehistoric landslides. Today, it is surrounded by an extraordinary amphitheatre of towering limestone cliffs and dramatic Alpine peaks, creating one of the most spectacular natural settings in the Swiss Alps.

The lake's remarkable colour is one of its most captivating features. Depending on the sunlight, season and weather, its waters shift between deep blue, emerald and brilliant turquoise. The surrounding mountains, snowfields and forests are reflected on its surface, producing an almost surreal landscape.

The imposing peaks of Blüemlisalp, Fründenhorn and Doldenhorn dominate the horizon, while waterfalls tumble down the steep mountain walls, particularly during the warmer months when snow and ice begin to melt.

Oeschinensee is not simply a place to admire from a distance. It is an experience that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the natural world.

The Cable Car Journey: A Scenic Gateway to Paradise

One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to reach the lake is by taking the Kandersteg–Oeschinen cable car. The journey offers breathtaking views as the gondola climbs above the valley, gradually revealing forests, alpine pastures and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery.

From the mountain station, visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk of approximately 20–30 minutes to reach the lake. Alternatively, a local electric shuttle operates seasonally, making access easier for those who prefer not to walk.

The panoramic viewpoints along the way offer wonderful opportunities to appreciate the extraordinary scale of the surrounding landscape.

Walking Trails and Alpine Adventures

For those who enjoy walking, Oeschinensee offers several trails ranging from gentle lakeside strolls to challenging mountain hikes.

The panoramic Heuberg trail is particularly spectacular. This demanding circular route climbs above the lake, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views of the turquoise waters framed by towering mountain walls. It is one of the finest viewpoints in the region, although it requires good fitness, suitable footwear and favourable weather conditions.

Another popular option is the walk towards the Oberbärgli area, where the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with rocky slopes, alpine pastures and magnificent mountain panoramas.

For a more relaxed experience, the lakeside paths provide opportunities to enjoy the scenery at a slower pace, listen to the gentle movement of the water and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere.

Experiences on the Lake

During the summer season, visitors can enjoy rowing boats and explore the lake from the water. Drifting across its turquoise surface, surrounded by enormous mountain walls, is an unforgettable experience.

Fishing is also possible with the appropriate permit, while designated areas around the lake provide opportunities for picnicking and relaxation.

The region also offers mountain restaurants and refreshment stops where visitors can enjoy traditional Swiss specialities while taking in the spectacular scenery.

For adventure enthusiasts, the summer toboggan run near the mountain station adds another dimension to the experience. In winter, the entire landscape transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, with opportunities for winter walking and other seasonal activities, subject to conditions.

A UNESCO Natural Treasure

Oeschinensee forms part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage property, recognised for its outstanding Alpine landscapes and geological significance. Its combination of glacial formations, dramatic mountain scenery, rich biodiversity and pristine waters makes it one of the most remarkable natural destinations in Switzerland.

The best time to experience the lake is generally from late spring to early autumn, when hiking trails and summer activities are accessible. However, mountain weather can change rapidly, and visitors should always check local conditions before setting out.

Kandersteg and Oeschinen Lake remind us that travel is not always about visiting famous cities, shopping streets or architectural landmarks. Sometimes, the most extraordinary experiences are found far away from urban life, where nature takes centre stage and silence becomes a luxury.

Standing before Oeschinensee, with its impossibly blue waters and towering Alpine cliffs, one begins to understand why Switzerland has become synonymous with natural perfection.

Some destinations impress us. Others stay with us long after we have left. Kandersteg and Oeschinen Lake undoubtedly belong to the latter.

Switzerland is not merely a country to visit. It is a landscape to fall in love with.
