(in Leopoldskron-Moos, a southern district of the city of Salzburg, in Austria) Schloss Leopoldskron is a rococo palace and a national historic monument in Leopoldskron-Moos. The palace, and its surrounding seven hectare (~17 acre) park, is located on the lake known as Leopoldskroner Weiher. In 1736, Salzburg prince-archbishop Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian built Schloss Leopoldskron as the family residence. Since 1965, Schloss Leopoldskron has been well known far beyond Austria’s borders as an original shooting location for the world-famous movie “The Sound of Music.“ (The grand rococo palace is where the lake scene was filmed in The Sound of Music. Its Venetian Room was the blueprint for the Trapps' lavish ballroom, where the children bid their farewells.) In 1918, the palace was bought by theater impresario Max Reinhardt, who restored it and came up with the idea of a Salzburg Festival within its walls. (The palace is a 15-minute walk from Festung Hohensalzburg -- the formidable clifftop fortress and the mountains beyond; it's a backdrop that did the lordly prince-archbishops and Maria proud.)

It is sometimes called the Venice of Portugal because of its network of pretty canals. But where the Italian city has gondolas, Aveiro has the moliceiros – once employed for seaweed-harvesting but now used for Ria de Aveiro canal cruises. Aveiro's old town features buildings decorated with traditional azulejo tiles. Important tourist attractions are the Art Nouveau architectural designs of some buildings that were created in the early 20th century, the Art Nouveau museum, the Aveiro Museum (Museu de Aveiro (formerly the Mosteiro de Jesus convent) with exhibits of King Afonso V's daughter, Santa Joana), the 15th century Aveiro Sé (or São Domingos cathedral) and the Church of Jesus (Igreja de Jesus) with its beautiful architecture. It became a municipality by the amalgamation of three separate towns: Bremerhaven, founded (in 1827) as a port for Bremen by its mayor, Johann Smidt, on territory ceded by Hanover; Geestemünde, founded by Hanover in 1845; and Lehe, a borough dating from medieval times that attained town status in 1920. This unified city became known (after WWII) as Bremerhaven. Repeated cessions of Prussian territory expanded the docks after the opening of the "Old Harbor” in 1830, and Bremerhaven developed as Germany’s largest fishing port. After 1857, as headquarters of the North German Lloyd Steamship Company, it became Germany’s largest passenger port, with its Columbus Quay and Columbus Station handling transatlantic traffic. Most freight traffic was diverted to Bremen after improvements were made to the Weser Channel (in the late 19th century. The harbor is now especially important for handling containers and the import and export of motor vehicles.
