"Snow falling soundlessly in the middle of the night will always fill my heart with sweet clarity." -- Novala Takemoto

(in the Flemish Region of Belgium) A medieval delight, Brugge (a.k.a. Bruges) charms visitors with its pretty cobblestone streets and winding canals. With cozy horse-drawn carriage rides, an excess of mouth-watering chocolates, and gorgeous gothic architecture, Brugge is worth visiting all year round, but during winter, it’s quite magical. One of Europe’s more beautiful cities, this UNESCO World Heritage Site with an intricate network of canals has led many to describe the city as the "Venice of the North." Its calm canals lined with chocolate-box houses, lovely landscapes, and well preserved medieval architecture (resembling scenes from a traditional Christmas card), Brugge makes for a great winter getaway. Whether admiring the old gild houses that surround the Market Square, or wandering the Steenstraat, winter is indeed a fine time to visit this charming town. The heart of ancient Brugge, the old Market Square is lined with pavement cafes beneath step-gabled facades. The scene is dominated by the Belfort, Belgium's most famous belfry. Its iconic octagonal tower is perhaps better appreciated from a distancer than by climbing the 366 steps to its top.
