"In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death." -- Anne Frank
===================(in the capital of the Netherlands) Amsterdam has many attractions in the winter for those willing to brave the colder weather. From its picturesque canals and bridges to its historic homes, Amsterdam is a full-blown fairytale. The ever-present bicycles and coffee shops around town don’t hurt either. Must-see sights include the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum. Other visitors might want to linger in the popular coffee shops, which is just are a normal part of the city's landscape. Winter days in Amsterdam are similar to those in the northeastern United States, with the sun setting early in mid-winter -- and February is usually the coldest month. Valentine’s Day isn’t a native Dutch holiday, and although Amsterdammers observe some of its traditions, it’s not as widely celebrated as it is in the United States. If you’re staying in Amsterdam and looking for a day trip, Delft is an hour away by train and features the annual De Koninck Blues Festival every (normal) February. (Blues musicians take over more than 30 venues in Delft's Old Town for a few days of performances.)
