At Saint Michael's Abbey, near to the city of Torino, Italy

(near Torino, Italy) Dedicated to the the Archangel Michele, the Sacra di San Michele (a.k.a. Saint Michael's Abbey) is located along a route of pilgrimage (more than 2000 km, or 1250 mi. long), which runs from Mont Saint-Michel (in France) to Monte Sant’Angelo (in Puglia, Italy). The Abbey is a religious complex on Mount Pirchiriano (on the south side of the Val di Susa) in the town of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy.

Like many of the pinnacle-top sites dedicated to the archangel Michael, the exact dates and stories of construction have been lost to time, but it dates to at least the 11th century, if not earlier. It stood abandoned from 1622-1835, but was restored in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Abbey, which for much of its history came under Benedictine rule, is now entrusted to the Roman Catholic Rosminians.

In the port city of Malaga, Spain

(in Spain) Malaga, on Spain's Costa del Sol, lies at the feet of the Montes de Malaga, about 100 km (or 63 mi.) east of the Strait of Gibraltar. Loaded with history and brimming with a youthful vigor that gladly acknowledges its multi-layered past, the city that gave the world Picasso has transformed itself in spectacular fashion in recent years, with several new art galleries, a redesigned port area and a nascent art district called Soho. The most important places to visit here include: Malaga's Cathedral (established on the former Great Mosque, after the reconquest in 1528), The Picasso Museum, the Roman Theater (located close to the Alcazaba Fortress), La Alcazaba of Málaga (one of most popular tourist attractions in Malaga), which witnessed the passage of Arab civilization in Andalusia), and many more.

Come here for tapas washed down with sweet local wine, and stay in a boutique hotel sandwiched in between a Roman amphitheater, a Moorish fortress, and the polychromatic Pompidou Center, while you begin to appreciate how eloquently Málaga has reinvented itself for this 21st century.

In the city of Potsdam, Germany

“A crown is merely a hat that lets the rain in.” -- Frederick the Great

---------------------------------------
(in Potsdam, Germany) Back in the day, Frederick II (the Great) wanted to cultivate plums, figs and grape vines on Potsdam’s doorstep. In 1744, he had a terraced garden designed in Sanssouci Park for this purpose. But, due to the exceptionally beautiful view, the idea soon crossed the king’s mind to build a large summer residence above the terraces -- and, due to his greatness, thus was it (soon) so. In addition, the New Palace and the picture gallery were constructed in subsequent years, while the slopes of the castle were used as flower and vegetable gardens. Today, you will also find Frederick II’s tomb on the castle hill. The baroque garden was later redesigned in the style of a landscape park under Frederick the Great’s successors and was expanded by Frederick William IV with structures such as Charlottenhof Castle, the orangery, and the Roman Baths. They were to meant to reflect part of Italy in his own native country. Today, the castles in Sanssouci Park serve as fabulous backdrops for key events, such as the Potsdam court concerts, or various musical festivals.

In the city of Pisa, Tuscany region, Italy

(in Italy) A city with aristocratic airs and rich in charm that, thanks to the nearby sea, emanates a special light, Pisa is a quiet provincial university town that is renowned for its art and architectural treasures. The city also retains much of its 6.5-mile (10.5-kilometer) circuit of medieval walls.

Pisa is distinguished above all by a remarkable group of buildings in the Piazza del Duomo, the so-called Square of Miracles, located at the northwestern end of the walled city. This Piazza dei Miracoli contains the cathedral, or Duomo; the baptistery; the campanile, or Leaning Tower of Pisa; and the camposanto, or cemetery.
Located in the northern half of Tuscany, not far from the coast and about an hour west of Florence, Pisa was one of the four great maritime republics in the Middle Ages, and it retains a good selection of monuments from that era. Students from across Italy compete for places in its elite university. This endows the center of town with a vibrant cafe and bar scene, balancing an enviable portfolio of Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches, and Renaissance piazzas with a lively street life dominated by locals rather than tourists – a charm you will not discover if you restrict your visit to Piazza dei Miracoli.
